China and Belarus have been exploring new forms of educational exchanges and cooperation, and have jointly built six Confucius Institutes and two Confucius Classrooms. The greatest challenge for Chinese teachers from Confucius Institutes working in Belarus is cultural adaptation. In this paper, we interviewed Chinese language teachers working in Belarus in the light of the theory of acculturation, and through statistical analysis, we revealed the overall pattern of acculturation of Chinese teachers in Belarus, the barriers to acculturation, and put forward strategic suggestions. Specifically, the Chinese teachers are able to adapt well in Belarus, but the lack of cross-cultural experiences and knowledge and skills make them face various difficulties. Teachers’ cross-cultural adaptation barriers can be categorized into five types: language adaptation barriers, life adaptation barriers, teaching management discomforts, conceptual system discomforts, and sociallization barriers. The study also found that Chinese teacher’ knowledge and skills, overseas work experience, teaching management ability, and cross-cultural sensitivity have different degrees of positive effects on teachers’ adaptive ability, with cross-cultural sensitivity having the greatest impact.
