    The Check-list of Belarus Coleoptera

    Summary The previous „Catalogue of the beetles of Belarus” was published over 25 years ago (Alexandrovich et al. 1996). Since that time numerous taxonomic changes have been introduced, new data on the already recorded species were collected, information on 868 species that were not included in this earlier list were gathered, moreover, 111 species were previously wrongly identified. The presented new catalogue includes 985 literature sources, containing some publications from before 1996 that were not included in the previous edition. The bibliography contains all works known to the authors from Belarus published for the last 26 years on fauna and on ecology of beetles. It also refers to the newest records, confirmed with the material in collections. As a result of our investigation the total species number in Belarus amounted to 4112 (including 6 subspecies and 155 doubtful species), from 1296 genera and 98 families. Based on the species composition in the faunas of the neighbouring regions, it might be assumed that we know about 80 to 85% of beetle species in Belarus. In the fauna of Belarus four families predominate, as the species number is considered: Staphylinidae (22,4% of the total species number), Curculionidae (13,0%), Chrysomelidae (8,4%) and Carabidae (8,4%). The remaining 94 families include 44,5% of species. The highest species number was recorded in Western Dvina, Neman-Cispolesye and Oshmyany-Minsk regions. Our knowledge on the beetle fauna of the Orsha-Mogilev and Berezina-Cispolesye regions, is the poorest.
